The first company to manufacture automobiles was the Duryea Motor Wagon Company. Within a short span of time, the brands Cadillac, Ford and Winton also started the mass production of cars. Of these, the first two brands are still producing cars in the modern times.
In 1898, Louis Renault modified a De Dion-Bouton to introduce a fixed shaft and a differential which propelled the Renault brand into the car industry. The usefulness of the automobiles came to view with Historic long drives of people like Bertha Benz, the wife of Karl Benz who travelled over 80 km in the vehicles manufactured by her husband. Other historical drives such as Horatio Nelson Jackson’s transcontinental drive allowed the common people to grasp the entirety of what a car had to offer.
